The following are some achievements in Iselamagazi ADP since October 2003:

Paul Anthony, recipient of the first
'biogas unit', demonstrates how to
operate a biogas-powered light.
Health and Sanitation
  • Installed a solar panel to provide electricity to Nindo Health Centre. They can now refrigerate vaccines and safely deliver babies during the night.
  • Built a house for health staff and began construction of two health centres. The community assisted by providing construction materials.
HIV/AIDS
  • Held 40 HIV/AIDS campaigns with drama performances. More than 90 people volunteered for HIV testing.
  • Held 12 cultural performances to increase community awareness of HIV/AIDS.
  • Held 48 meetings about HIV/AIDS in 12 villages.
  • Provided 1,620 copies of HIV/AIDS educational materials for standard five, six and seven students in 12 primary schools.
  • Held monthly training sessions for community counsellors from 12 villages.
  • Formed 12 HIV/AIDS clubs in primary schools.
  • Printed and distributed 1,000 t-shirts with HIV/AIDS messages.
Education
  • Opened Iselamagazi Secondary School.
  • Constructed seven classrooms, two teachers’ offices, four teachers’ houses and two toilet blocks. The communities contributed building materials to help with the construction.
  • Held 12 village parents’ days. These are held on an annual basis to educate parents about the importance of education.
  • Trained 23 children’s committees in advocacy and child rights and responsibilities.
  • Held mock examinations for standard four and standard seven students, which increased students’ pass rate in national primary school exams from 11 per cent to 28 per cent and increased students’ pass rate in final primary school exams from three per cent to 16 per cent. This will increase the number of students going on to secondary school.
Agriculture and food security
  • Taught modern farming practices to 1,155 local farmers through 24 previously trained demonstration farmers.
  • Trained 94 representatives of farmers’ focus groups in group dynamics, group management and leadership, finance and principles of cooperatives.
  • Trained 36 representatives of women’s work groups to raise poultry.
  • Supplied 2,000 kg of maize seed and 500 kg of sprout seed to 200 members of farmers’ focus groups to establish demonstration farms.
  • Constructed one ‘biogas unit’ and began construction of two others. ‘Biogas units’ use manure to fuel lamps and stoves.
Economic Development
  • Supported 40 school leavers by training them in business management and entrepreneurial skills and providing them with loans to start small businesses.
  • Held community meetings about microenterprise development and set up community groups in four villages.
  • Trained the members of four new microenterprise groups in business management skills, credit and savings schemes, record keeping and entrepeneurship skills.
Leadership Development
  • Completed the process of registering a community-based organisation called Iselamagazi Community Development Agency with the local government and began the process of registering it at national level.
  • Trained 43 members of Iselamagazi Community Development Agency in management of a community-based organisation.
  • Designed the constitution for Iselamagazi Community Development Agency at six agency meetings.
Spiritual Development
  • Held a meeting for leaders of churches and other faith-based organisations.
  • Trained 56 leaders from 11 Christian churches in HIV/AIDS issues.
