Achievements
Recently, Iselamagazi Area Development Programme (ADP) has:
    Health and sanitation
  • Constructed a health clinic and a house for the health staff
  • Provided bed sheets for 1,400 sponsored children

  • HIV and AIDS
  • Formed AIDS clubs in 13 schools; the clubs have 1,800 members
  • Trained 70 teenagers to educate their peers about HIV and AIDS; they have reached 8,400 students
  • Provided four test kits for the voluntary HIV-counselling and testing centre and encouraged community members to be tested and counselled for HIV
  • Facilitated two counsellors based at the testing centre to attend refresher-training courses
  • Trained 48 community-based counsellors
  • Provided 40 bicycles for village health workers and community HIV and AIDS counsellors

  • Education
  • Provided school uniforms for 628 children affected by HIV and AIDS
  • Provided 1,000 text books for 13 primary schools
  • Constructed seven classrooms
  • Constructed six houses for teachers to stay near the schools where they teach

  • Agriculture and food security
  • Provided 200,000 drought-resistant cassava cuttings
  • Provided 60 ox-ploughs
  • Trained 24 farmers to multiply seeds
  • Established four livestock-keepers’ groups and trained 120 livestock keepers
  • Provided farmers with 40 female dairy goats and four male goats
  • Trained 120 members of school environment clubs to conserve the environment and raise tree seedlings
  • Provided seedlings and materials for school tree nurseries

  • Economic development
  • Facilitated 70 teenagers to learn tailoring skills
  • Trained 70 people from four income-generating groups to make tie-dyed clothing
  • Trained 70 members of income-generating groups in entrepreneurship skills
  • Facilitated 24 income-generating groups to join a savings and credit society
  • Trained 120 members of the savings and loans society in money management and entrepreneurship skills

  • Leadership development
  • Trained 36 community-based organisation members and 26 development committee members in leadership, management and book-keeping

Challenges
The people of Iselamagazi still have a number of challenges ahead of them. During the next year, World Vision will focus on increasing household security by promoting drought-resistant crops and alternative ways to generate income. It will also continue to train community leadership to be able to respond to future development needs.
