Learning it all

Schooling is about more than learning reading, writing and arithmetic. What children learn in the classroom gives them the skills they need for life beyond school.

Rosemary Shirma teaches her classes
about HIV and AIDS.
In a community such as Magugu, Tanzania, where children have to deal with the effects of HIV and AIDS on a daily basis, school can be the one place of respite against an often harsh reality. Concerned about the effects of HIV and AIDS on children from Magugu, World Vision has started training teachers to integrate HIV and AIDS and life-skills information into their lessons. Last year, 47 primary school teachers attended three days of training facilitated by World Vision.

Rosemary Shirima, one of the teachers who attended the course, was impressed: “The workshop was very well run; in fact, it was very interesting! The knowledge and skills we gained are important for teaching our children. As teachers, we are very close to our students and in a position to impart life-changing information to them. What we have learned will help us to protect this generation from HIV and AIDS and provide a window of hope.”
