Since it began child sponsorship in October 2005, Magugu Area Development Programme (ADP) has undertaken a number of activities:

Members of the newly-formed ADP committee
attend regular meetings and workshops so
they can take the lead in development activities
in their community.
Health and sanitation
  • Trained 26 village health workers, 10 traditional birth attendants and 14 traditional healers to prevent and manage malaria
HIV and AIDS
  • Held meetings in seven villages to form community care committees to care for people affected by AIDS
  • Held monthly meetings with these community care committees
  • Took 13 committee members to visit another ADP to find out how they go about caring for people with AIDS
Education
  • Trained 47 teachers to use Adventure Unlimited – values-based life skills materials with a particular focus on HIV-prevention
Children learn about their basic rights - to water,
shelter, education - so they can teach others
in their community.
Economic development
  • Formed 40 groups to support people in their income-generating activities
  • Trained 72 group leaders in leadership, production management and small business skills
Leadership development
  • Formed sub committees to focus on different aspects of development including farming, keeping livestock, water users, environment and HIV and AIDS, in nine of the 14 villages covered by the ADP
  • Trained 40 village leaders to plan, manage and evaluate development projects
  • Trained the ADP committee in project planning, management, evaluation and financial accountability
  • Facilitated a meeting with 10 members of other non-governmental organisations working in the locality
Justice
  • Held a seminar about child rights and advocacy for 20 members of the children’s committee
