Achievements
Since October 2006, Nkoma Area Development Programme (ADP) has:

Health and sanitation

  • Conducted refresher training for 12 village health workers and 12 traditional birth attendants on basic health practices to educate the community
  • Provided 15 bicycles to health workers so they can reach more people
  • Installed rainwater-harvesting tanks at three primary schools, a secondary school and a health centre

HIV and AIDS

  • Trained 90 group leaders, counsellors and church leaders in home-based care and support skills for orphans and vulnerable children and people living with AIDS
  • Provided 3000 insecticide-treated nets and 3000 bars of laundry soap to orphans and vulnerable children and people living with AIDS

Agriculture and food security

  • Provided training for 12 village leaders in improved agricultural practices and dairy cattle management; they will become trainers themselves and pass their skills on to others
  • Supplied four tonnes of maize seeds to 200 farmers; the seed is an improved type of maize which will result in better yields
  • Supplied 80 ox ploughs to farm group members
  • Trained 46 women in poultry keeping and management, record keeping and marketing

Economic development

  • Trained 80 local government leaders and 120 community leaders in managing community business organisations

The people of Nkoma still have a number of challenges ahead of them. During the next year, World Vision will focus on agriculture, economic development, leadership and HIV and AIDS.
