Taking care of your own The phrase “taking care of your own” sums up the approach taken by the community care coalitions working in Buyamba, except that in this instance, the words “your own” encompass all of the children in the community!
The home visitors each keep an eye on about 10 children, providing material and psychological support. The assistance is making a huge difference for the children and their families. When two children and their mother lost their home during strong winds, their local community care coalition came to the rescue, constructing a temporary thatch house to provide immediate shelter for the family. Another coalition has established a garden to provide food for the children they care for. By growing maize, cassava, sweet potatoes and beans, the group is able to provide two meals a day for 276 children, and still have produce left over to sell. The money they earn is put to good use supporting the children. Home visitors talk to parents about the importance of schooling, encouraging them to prioritise education. They also provide school materials for needy children. The initiative has also had a real impact on children’s hygiene and sanitation too. These community care coalitions are good for the adults in the community, as well as the children. The groups bring together people from different religious, political and economic backgrounds, and teach them to work together with a common goal – the wellbeing of their children. |
