The busy lake front is the centre of community
life and a great place to educate people
about HIV and AIDS.
Achievements

Since October 2006, Panyimur Area Development Programme (ADP) has:

    Health

  • Promoted hygienic hand-washing stations in three villages
  • Held monthly village campaigns to promote health, hygiene and sanitation
  • Raised awareness of HIV and AIDS at primary schools and on the lake front
  • Trained 53 people, including school teachers, adult literacy tutors, church leaders and members of community-based organisations, to educate community members, especially children and teenagers, about HIV and AIDS
  • Education

  • Educated community members about the importance of schooling
  • Provided end of term exams for primary and secondary schools
  • Provided uniforms for needy students
  • Completed a four-classroom block at Boro primary school
  • Provided furniture and equipment for the science laboratory at Panyimur Senior Secondary School
  • Established a Vision club to promote life skills at Panyimur primary school
  • Supported 15 adult literacy centres; 350 adults study at the centres
  • Provided educational materials for one adult literacy centre
  • Provided refresher training for 32 adult literacy tutors
  • Agriculture and income generation

  • Trained 60 farmers in modern agricultural techniques
  • Provided rice seed for 60 farmers
  • Trained three farmers groups to establish tree nurseries and raise seedlings
  • Provided 227 sponsored children with goats
  • Trained 86 members of Aweko Ni Mungu AIDS Alliance to establish income-generating activities
  • Started a campaign called Greener Panyimur to improve the environment and provided 4,200 fruit trees; the campaign also promotes soil conservation, energy-saving stoves and sanitary waste disposal
  • Leadership development

  • Assisted community-based organisations to assess their operations and develop strategic plans
  • Held three days of training for 63 members of community-based organisations

Challenges

The people of Panyimur still have a few of challenges ahead of them. During the next year, World Vision will focus on building the capacity of leaders to address their community’s needs into the future.
