Coffee anyone? Although their only heard about plant nurseries in February 2007, Kyosinba Onaanya farmers group is already a great success!
Kyosinba Onaanya farmers group decided to establish a nursery. To assist their community to access good quality seedlings, they began to grow seedlings for common food plants as well as seedlings for crops that people can sell, such as coffee and fruit. One of the group members, Peter Kayijja, says the group has established links with the National Agricultural Development Association and obtained seeds for an improved variety of coffee called katimu. This coffee is resistant to pests and disease, so is highly desired by coffee farmers. The group is currently growing more than 5,000 coffee seedlings, which will soon be ready for farmers to plant. Nimrod Kajaji, another group member, explains that through World Vision training he learned to graft passionfruit seedlings, a skill he uses at the nursery and teaches to others in his community. While World Vision assisted the group to establish its nursery, it has quickly become a viable operation in its own right. Nimrod Kajaji says the 2,000 seedlings they have already sold fetched a good price, which has been invested in more equipment for the nursery. They are looking to continue expanding with each new crop of seedlings, beginning with the coffee they are about to sell. |
