Cool school

People from Rakai-Kooki are coming up with innovative ways of looking out for the children in their community.

Students of the primary school in Lukondo
village show off the school’s new resources.
In early 2007, World Vision trained volunteers from Rakai-Kooki in an approach to caring for orphans and vulnerable children, called community care coalitions. By establishing coalitions within villages, adults support each other in assisting the children.

After the training, volunteers from Lukondo village began to discuss the issues worrying local children. One problem that emerged was children from their village generally didn’t start school until older than the national enrolment age. Although everyone there knew of the importance of education, there wasn’t a school in their village and guardians worried about young children having to walk to the next village every day.

The volunteers discussed ways to help young children receive the education they need and decided to establish an informal school to provide early primary education in their village.

With World Vision support, they rented a room for the school, obtained basic teaching and learning supplies and made uniforms for the children. To provide the children with milk during break times, they are raising three goats. They have also established a parent-teacher association.

So far 50 children have enrolled at the school under the guidance of two teachers. The next project for the community care coalition is to purchase their own, bigger, classroom because the rented room has reached capacity. With the innovation shown by these volunteers, it won’t take long to achieve this.
