What do you get when you cross a goat?

Nuriat’s goat is not only helping to improve her family’s financial situation, it is also assisting Rakai-Kooki Area Development Programme (ADP) to achieve its aim of improving the bloodlines of goats in the area.

Nuriat's goat is benefiting her family and
her whole community
In 2002 Nuriat attended a Rakai-Kooki ADP animal husbandry workshop. There, she learned how to care for goats and prevent them from succumbing to disease. After successfully completing the training, Nuriat received a male goat from the ADP.

This goat was not just any old local billy, he was a specially selected South African Boer goat, a breed known for its good meat yield. By introducing high-quality male goats of a different variety to crossbreed with local nannies, the ADP hoped to improve Rakai-Kooki’s goat stock. Nuriat’s goat was one of the first stud animals in the area.

As well as breeding the he-goat with her seven she-goats, Nuriat lends him to her neighbours for a NZ$1.50 stud fee. Her income from this more than covers the cost of his food and veterinary services, so Nuriat is able to save about NZ$120 a year.

The local variety goats are mainly used for their meat, so Nuriat’s family benefits from the protein. She also sells some of their young.

Nuriat’s interaction with her neighbours and their goats also makes her a great source of information for buyers and sellers.

With her first year’s savings Nuriat bought a bull, which she traded for two cows a year later. Armed with her knowledge of animal husbandry, she has plans to crossbreed cows too.

If you asked Nuriat what she gets when she crosses a goat, she would tell you she gets enough income to support her family and expand her small farm!
