New hope
People from Kanoni village in Uganda have found hope despite the harshness of local conditions.

While working with the Rakai-Kooki community, World Vision staff realised that some people feel depressed and overwhelmed by the struggles caused by living in a region devastated by civil war and HIV and AIDS. So they decided to begin interpersonal therapy and support groups to help people cope and support each other.
Kanoni village was selected to trial the 16-week group therapy course, and two groups were established – one for men and one for women. During the course, interactive activities helped group members process ideas, identify triggers and set goals. By the final week, group members had a different outlook on life – one of hope.
After working together at a deeply personal level, both groups decided to continue supporting each other and each began a group project – the women’s group began raising pigs and the men’s group established a chicken farm. As a further development, both groups have started the process of registering with the government as community-based organisations.
World Vision staff are thrilled by the success of the groups and plan to begin groups in more villages throughout Rakai-Kooki ADP to help others find ways of working on their problems together.
