Open for learning It was an exciting year for education in Rakai-Kooki Area Development Programme (ADP). Four educational structures were completed and five received furniture.
The three classroom block is quite an achievement as it is the first school building in the sub-county to be constructed using metal and glass. “We will be the envy of neighbouring schools,” said Kisomole Primary School’s Management Committee Chairman (the Management Committee is equivalent to a New Zealand school’s Board of Trustees). Although this was a major step forward, the school needs more buildings as there are still classes being held outside under the mango trees. At Kakoma Secondary School they were also celebrating, with formal events to commission their new girls’ hostel, toilet block and 10,000 litre water tank. The hostel has four rooms for students and two rooms for supervisors. It will accommodate 300 girls, allowing them to continue their education beyond primary school level. “One of the biggest problems for schools in Africa is the distance students have to walk,” says World Vision New Zealand Programme Officer Murray Boardman. “When students live closer to school their attendance and achievement improves.” Parents of the pupils and the school management committee were extremely grateful to World Vision for all they have done. Further accomplishments in the ADP included completing a three classroom block at Bbale Ggunda Primary school and constructing a science laboratory at Katerero Secondary School. Katerero will have to wait a little longer to use their new building as it is not yet furnished. Special gifts from sponsors of students at Kinyerere and Mukoko Moslem primary schools were used to acquire 27 school desks for these schools. The ADP was able to provide school furniture to several schools. Kisomole Primary School and Bbale Gungda Primary School each received 50 desks for their new buildings. Library furniture, including 50 chairs and six tables, was provided to Kakoma Secondary School. |
