The following are some of Rakai-Kooki ADP’s achievements since January 2004:

Community members get an introduction
to their new goats.
Agriculture and food security
  • Trained 330 families of sponsored children, orphans and vulnerable children to take care of goats and pigs, and provided them with a total of 450 local goats. Model farmers received 30 male Boer goats to crossbreed with the goats belonging to the families to improve goat quality. The crossbreed goats grow faster and are heavier, therefore earning more money when sold than a local breed.
  • Provided 26 exotic piglets to crossbreed with local varieties to improve the quality of the offspring.
  • Subsidised 2,400kg of improved maize seeds and 2,900 kg of improved bean seeds to 280 families of orphans and vulnerable children so they can harvest larger crops.
  • Distributed 500 vanilla vines to 160 families of sponsored children, orphans and vulnerable children to grow as a cash crop to increase their incomes.
Health and sanitation
  • Facilitated medical treatment for 25 sponsored children who had health problems such as malaria, measles, skin diseases, and eye and ear infections.
  • Distributed 227 tins of malaria medication to one hospital and three health units.
  • Distributed 399 mosquito nets to sponsored children, orphans and vulnerable children.
  • Improved housing and sanitation for 11 families with orphans and vulnerable children.
  • Trained 200 malaria monitors and provided them with bicycles. Malaria is the main cause of death of children in Uganda.
HIV/AIDS
  • Supported 28 people living with HIV/AIDS by providing blankets or paying for transportation to a health centre.
  • Held a one-week residential workshop to train 10 teachers, from five primary schools, in values-based HIV/AIDS prevention. Held two training sessions for 10 health volunteers in values-based HIV/AIDS prevention for 5-15 age group. The health volunteers have gone on to train about 100 students.
  • Educated students from five schools about HIV/AIDS using a programme called “Adventure Unlimited” which helps children between the ages of 10 and 14 prepare for teenage and adult life. It is written in simple English and contains a lot of information on HIV/AIDS.
Education
  • Provided all 2,293 sponsored school children with exercise books (35,136 in total).
  • Provided school uniforms for 516 sponsored children.
  • Supported school fees for around 200 orphans and vulnerable children attending secondary school and seven in tertiary study.
  • Distributed nine sewing machines to youth trainers to equip at least 90 youths with tailoring skills.
Leadership development
  • Trained 38 people to educate the community on the vulnerability of women and children to HIV/AIDS.
  • Facilitated 11 community leaders to begin a computer course.
