The following are some achievements in Rakai-Kooki Area Development Programme (ADP) since October 2004:

Science classes in Rakai-Kooki are a lot more
interesting thanks to the improved school facilities
Health and Sanitation
  • Held a refresher training workshop for 200 malaria prevention volunteers.
  • Distributed 1,370 blankets and 1,540 insecticide-treated mosquito nets to sponsored and other needy children.
  • Provided the families of 350 sponsored children with plastic jerry cans for storing water.
HIV/AIDS
  • Formed and trained 200 home-based care teams to provide care and counselling for families affected by HIV/AIDS.
  • Trained members of 14 childcare networks to care for orphaned and vulnerable children.
  • Assisted 20 people who are living positively with HIV/AIDS to present HIV messages around the community and encourage people to have their HIV status tested.
  • Educated more than 5,000 students from 10 primary schools about life skills and HIV/AIDS through a programme called Adventure Unlimited.
Education
  • Held seven career guidance workshops for 236 primary school-leavers; topics included the role of education, income-generating activities, responsible behaviour, HIV/AIDS and how to prevent it.
  • Constructed a block of three science laboratories and a 10,000 litre water tank to provide water for science classes. Provided furniture for the labs.
  • Began construction of a science block and three classrooms at two other schools.
  • Supported 256 children with school fees and provided 318 with school uniforms.
  • Provided over 3,000 students with a dozen exercise books for each of the three school terms.
Infrastructure
  • Assisted with the construction of 11 houses and one latrine.
  • Provided 1,000 litre home water tanks for 23 families.
Agriculture and food security
  • Trained 44 farmers to keep cattle and provided 22 of these families with local variety heifers; the other 22 families will receive the first calves produced.
  • Provided 200 families with one goat each.
  • Trained 742 farmers to grow cassava and sweet potatoes. Distributed 250 bags of cuttings of an improved variety of cassava to 300 families. When each family has harvested its first crop they are expected to pass a bag of cuttings on to another family. Each bag plants an acre of land.
  • Distributed 400 bags of sweet potato vines to 400 families with the expectation they will pass vines cuttings on to other families after the harvest.
  • Trained 90 families to grow bananas and provided them with 3,000 banana plants. When the plants multiply the families will split the clumps and give some away.
  • Trained 384 families to grow beans, maize and peanuts. Provided the families with 1,500 kg of improved bean seeds, 1,200 kg of improved maize and 900 kg of faster growing peanuts.
  • Facilitated 60 farmers to visit another district on a two-day agricultural study tour. They hope to be able to implement techniques they saw such as growing fruit trees and vegetable gardens.
Leadership Development
  • Selected and trained children to form 10 children’s committees to participate in community development.
