Women to be the winners

Women will be among the main beneficiaries of World Vision New Zealand’s newest community development programme.

Young children help with chores like collecting water.
World Vision New Zealand began supporting the Tafea Community Development Programme (CDP) in Tanna Island, Vanuatu, in October 2003. It expects the CDP will make a significant improvement in women’s lives, particularly in accessing services.

Women in Tanna are almost solely responsible for raising children, domestic duties and food production. The isolation of many communities, lack of transport and low level of government funding result in a poor level of basic services. Consequently, women face significant obstacles in fulfilling their home-based responsibilities.

As prime carers, women are responsible for the educational needs of young children. The CDP will work with the national pre-school association to build new pre-schools, improving the service and raising awareness of the importance of education. Children will have shorter distances to travel to pre-school, giving them time to assist their mothers with family chores, such as collecting water.

Water and health facilities are two examples of community services that men in chiefly councils decide upon. Traditionally these councils exclude women from decision-making, even though women are more likely to be the ones using these facilities. World Vision will support women’s groups and help women gain representation in village-level decision-making.

By helping to build the capabilities of community-based committees comprising both men and women, the CDP will increase the participation of women in community activities and decision-making.
