Environment follow-up One year on, the benefits of a now completed environmental project in Nakonde are still being felt.
World Vision’s three-year Environment Conservation Project ended in June 2002. The project was financed through the New Zealand Government’s Voluntary Agencies Support Scheme (VASS). The project’s goal was to contribute to the increased incomes and well being of more than 8000 families in Nakonde District. This was to be achieved through: (1) raising community awareness of environmental issues; (2) enhancing forest conservation; (3) promoting the use of efficient mud stoves and braziers for domestic cooking; and (4) introducing environment-friendly businesses as alternatives to charcoal burning. Fish farming, which was one of the business alternatives, continues to grow in popularity. The number of households with fishponds has increased from 17 to 31 as more people realise the benefits of increased income and improved diet. Fish, which once was a rare and expensive commodity in Nakonde, has become more readily available and affordable. Although interest in energy-efficient mud stoves and charcoal braziers has been slower to develop, people are embracing the new technology as they realise the savings made in wood and charcoal use. Other benefits of the improved braziers, which sell for approximately 20,000 Kwacha (NZ$7) apiece, include faster heat times, more durability and being cleaner and safer to use. |
