What class! Renovated classrooms at a primary school in Nakonde ADP have increased school attendance, raised the level of education and caused a flurry of teacher applications.
Jason Sinkamba, a TDT* member and resident of Kantongo village says, “The buildings look more beautiful than others renovated by other organisations.” The District Education Board Secretary, echoed his comments when she visited the school, saying she was amazed at how run-down classrooms have turned into one of the most modern schools in the district. “We never expected World Vision to do such a commendable job. I wish all renovations could be done by them.” She has since announced the school has been officially upgraded and will accept Year Eight and Nine pupils from 2005. Mr. Kaoma, 30, a senior teacher at Kantongo Basic School says the school is receiving applications from teachers wanting to transfer there because they believe the school provides a better atmosphere for teachers. In another positive sign, the new classrooms are increasing student attendance. “The pupils are happy to be at a very nice looking school,” says Mr Kaoma. * TDT – The Tulemane Development Trust is a community-based organisation, which has replaced the Nakonde Area Development Co-ordinating Committee (NADCC). The Trust is gradually assuming the role of fostering community development in Nakonde from Nakonde ADP. Tulemane is a local Namwanga word meaning “let us unite”. |
