Land of her own
Lister Namulunga lives in the Musyani Zone of Nakonde Area Development Programme (ADP), Zambia. She is very grateful to World Vision for helping to change some of the repressive traditions of her community.
“When my husband passed away, 12 years ago, I never expected to be able to own land or possess items such as a grain storage bin,” says Lister. “In this traditional society it is very uncommon for a woman to own land.
“When Nakonde ADP started, I never thought it would be able to influence the traditional leaders or change the social norms and culture that we have always lived with. In our tradition women don’t have any economic status, so this is new to me.
“For the last 12 years I have had to go around the villages and beg for small plots of land to cultivate. Farming on borrowed pieces of land kept my household in poverty. My grandchildren and I have been allocated land and cleared it in readiness for the 2004/2005 season.
“I am so glad I don’t have to humble myself like that any more.
“Thank you to World Vision and Nakonde ADP for helping to change these harsh traditional and cultural beliefs.”
