Last laughs When David’s friends heard he was planning an orchard, they gave him some ribbing. However, now that he is literally picking the fruit of his labour, the joke is finally on them.
Although growing fruit trees had been his dream for years, the cost of buying seedlings and other materials convinced him it was not likely to come true. However, hope was just around the corner. In 1998, World Vision introduced a food security project in an effort to address the prevalent hunger situation in Nakonde. As part of the project, World Vision set up an orchard and distributed various fruit tree seedlings to 150 people, including David. World Vision worked in conjunction with the Government Forestry Department to arrange horticulture training for the fledgling orchardists. Now, five years later, David and his colleagues are picking papaws, guavas and avocados from the trees they planted. “I have five guava trees,” says David. “With the training and encouragement I got from World Vision, I am now able to grow healthy fruit and a variety of vegetables to earn money. I am able to send my children to school, buy medicines and meet other family expenses - things I found so hard to do before. In a village, getting K250,000 (approximately NZ$90) is no mean achievement. I am greatly indebted to World Vision.” In addition to the monetary gains, David’s family is also enjoying the benefit of a better diet. They no longer suffer from any of the common vitamin deficiencies in Nakonde because they eat plenty of fruit and vegetables, all grown in their backyard. |
