Some achievements of Nakonde ADP in the past year:

Schistosoma parasites can penetrate the
skin of people wading in contaminated water
  • Held educational talks at schools on prevention of schistosomiasis (bilharzia). This water-borne disease is caused by parasitic worms that feed on red blood cells and dissolved nutrients such as sugars and amino acids. This can cause anaemia and decreased resistance to other diseases. The ADP equipped teachers with information about the disease so they can continue to remind children about it.
  • Screened the health of 199 children. Common ailments detected were skin infections, malaria, malnutrition, conjunctivitis and bilharzia.
  • Supported the government immunisation programme. More than 12,000 children received immunisation against measles, tuberculosis, tetanus, whooping cough, diphtheria and poliomyelitis.
  • Distributed pigs, chickens and goats to child-headed families, people caring for orphans and other vulnerable families.
  • Held consultations with traditional leaders to investigate the possibility of families with big portions of land donating some to widows or to teenage mothers who have been abandoned by their husbands.
