The biggest humanitarian crisis of our time

After six years of conflict, more than 4.8 million people have fled and 6.1 million are displaced in Syria. They are people like us. Mums, dads, sons, daughters. They lived lives like us – as students, doctors, farmers, teachers, lawyers.

Millions of children have lost family members, their homes and witnessed violence. They are also missing out on many things that children need in order to grow – an education, interaction with other children and safe homes to return to.

Money raised this year will be used to fund the ongoing critical work in World Vision’s Child Friendly Spaces in Jordan.

470,000 have been killed


The Syrian refugee crisis is the greatest forced migration of people since World War II. It's the biggest humanitarian crisis of our time.

Over the past six years, around 1.9 million people have been wounded or permanently disabled. Neighbourhoods have been levelled, entire towns are now uninhabitable. The situation is ongoing and unpredictable.

8.2 million children are affected


Millions of children have experienced things that no child should. They have lost family members, their homes and witnessed violence.

Many refugee children have to work to support their families. Often they labour in dangerous or demeaning circumstances for little pay. Girls also are forced to marry as their parents fear for their daughter’s safety.

3.7 million children are out of school


Many of those who have fled across the border to Jordan have been out of school since the conflict began in 2011. The need to educate these children and help them heal is critical.

The decline in education for Syrian children has been the sharpest and most rapid in the history of the region. These kids are at risk of becoming a lost generation.

What are Child Friendly Spaces?

Child Friendly Spaces are safe, supportive places where kids have access to arts, sports, education and counselling so they can start to recover from the trauma of war, and just be kids again. Children can;
Learn critical literacy and numeracy skills.

  • Be kids again in a fun place with sports, team and cultural activities.
  • Express their feelings through role-plays, dance and talking.
  • Find out important information about what is happening around them.
  • Be looked after while their parents or caregivers attend to daily activities.

  • What should I do with the money I've raised?

    Thank you for taking up a fundraising challenge and raising money for children affected by the refugee crisis; your donations will make a real difference to the lives of these children. 

    If you're part of a school/church/group:

    • If your sponsors have paid by credit card or internet banking online - nice work, we've already got your funds.
    • If you've collected any cash or cheque donations, give them to your 40 Hour Famine organiser, along with your sponsorship book and they will bank the money for you.
    • If you're the 40 Hour Famine organiser, use your group’s 2017 deposit book to bank your group's funds at any ANZ branch. Please ensure the bank scans your 40 Hour Famine deposit slip included with your sponsorship book or includes your group’s unique reference number so we can track payments and allocate funds to the correct group.
    • If you've lost your group's 2017 deposit book you can order another one by emailing your name and address to: faminebooks@worldvision.org.nz 
    • Group organisers – using the Freepost sticker provided, please send all completed sponsorship books back as soon as possible. Freepost Famine, World Vision New Zealand, Private Bag 92078, Victoria Street West, Auckland 1142.

  • As a group organiser, how do I bank funds raised in the 40 Hour Famine?

    Thank you for taking on the role of group organiser. Our work wouldn't be possible without your hard work and dedication! 

    There are two easy options for banking your group's fundraising: 

    1. Transfer all money raised to World Vision's 40 Hour Famine account number: 06-0101-0323407-02. Don’t forget to include your unique reference number or school name. 
    2. Alternatively, use your 40 Hour Famine 2017 deposit book to bank your school/church/group's cash and cheque donations at any ANZ branch. Please ensure the bank includes your unique reference number so we can track and trace payments. If you've lost your 40 Hour Famine deposit book you can order another one by emailing your name and address to faminebooks@worldvision.org.nz
    It will take 48 hours for your money to show on your online fundraising profile if you have included your unique reference number.

  • What is the World Vision 40 Hour Famine?

    Every year since 1975, hundreds of thousands of young Kiwis have taken a stand through a 40 hour challenge to raise money for children living in poverty. Traditionally, this meant going without food. But over the years, people have become really creative, finding fun new challenges such as living in a box, doing 40 good deeds, and some have even gone as far as taking a 40 hour vow of silence. 

    So far, more than $77 million has been raised – helping to transform thousands of lives in over 40 countries. We’d love for you to join in.

  • Can I donate to a participant or a group online?

    Donating to a 40 Hour Famine participant or group online is easy! Search for their profile by name and follow the steps to donate via credit card. You will receive a receipt for tax purposes via email for donations over $5.

  • Can I still raise funds for the 2017 40 Hour Famine?

    Yes! Sign up to an online fundraising profile to do your 40 Hour Challenge when suits you. Remember to bank your donations by 7 July to make them count. 

  • How do I make sure our donations show up on our group’s online fundraising profile?

    Donations appear on your group's online fundraising profile in two different ways: 

    1. If people donate directly to your group or a member in your group via credit card donations will appear immediately on your group's online profile fundraising tracker. 
    2. If donations are made by cash or cheque, you can bank these at any ANZ branch using the 2017 deposit slips supplied in your 40 Hour Famine Organiser pack. Please ensure the bank scans your deposit slip or includes your unique reference number so we can track and trace payments. Donations banked at a branch will appear on your online fundraising profile the day after they are processed by World Vision (usually 3-4 days after banking).

  • How do I sign up for the 2017 40 Hour Famine online?

    Visit our Fundraise page to create an account and your fundraising profile.

  • How can I see my donations on my online fundraising profile?

    All donations made to you via credit card appear immediately on your profile. If you can’t see a recent donation, try refreshing your page after 10 minutes. 

    If you are not participating as part of a group: any cash or cheque donations need to be banked using the 2017 deposit slip and book number in your 40 Hour Famine Sponsorship book. These donations will appear on your online profile the day after they are processed by World Vision (approximately 3-4 days after banking). 

    If you’re participating as part of a group (e.g. school, church): give any cash or cheque donations to your 40 Hour Famine group organiser. They will bank your money along with the rest of your team's and it will increase your group's fundraising total on the group profile page. This change will take 48 hours before it shows on your profile.

  • What alternatives are there to the traditional 40 Hour ‘No-Food’ Challenge’?

    Want to choose another 40 Hour challenge? 

    We don’t mind! Give up technology, sleep in a box, wash cars, hold your own fundraiser, walk 40 kilometres. Be as creative as you like and do it in a group or on your own! 

    Most importantly it is about raising funds so we can help these kids - kids who are just like us - start to feel safe again in World Vision’s Child Friendly Spaces.

  • When was this year’s 40 Hour Famine?

    The 2017 40 Hour Famine was officially from 8pm, 9 June until midday, 11 June. If you missed the date you can still create an online profile and participate by choosing your own ‘Famine Challenge’ or fundraising event.
