Better health, quality education, enough food

Better health, quality education, enough food

On behalf of the entire community, I extend our deepest gratitude to you for being such a faithful sponsor.

Through your support for education, child protection, water and sanitation, health and livelihoods, and resilience, you’ve helped improve the lives and futures of children and their whole community.

At the start of our work here together, too many children in Onga were not in school and those who were had poor learning outcomes. Many children were malnourished and families had very limited livelihood opportunities, which significantly affected their children’s well-being.

The changes you’ve been part of

I’m pleased to share that your unwavering support has helped to significantly improve children’s lives. Among the many changes, here are three of the most significant I witnessed:
  • Improved literacy and learning outcomes: literacy levels rose from 5% in 2012 to 61% in 2025!
  • Gender equality and women’s empowerment: two-thirds of households have women actively engaged in decision-making
  • Child health and nutrition: fewer children under age five are suffering from stunting caused by malnutrition.
When the programme started, two-year-old Sarah was severely stunted, weighing only 6.8 kg. That’s about the weight of a healthy five-month-old. Her mother reported frequent illness, poor appetite, and delayed walking. Your care powered projects like regular child growth monitoring, mother’s groups, cooking demonstrations, and support for kitchen vegetable gardens. As Sarah’s family adopted better feeding and hygiene practices, her health improved. At age five, Sarah started school on time, and her mother proudly noted that she now plays confidently with her peers.

Challenges we've faced together

Over the years, several significant events shaped the community’s development journey. The most notable included back-to-back disasters like flooding and dry spells, the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, and Cyclone Freddy in 2023.

To support efforts to end hunger and malnutrition for children in the wake of these crises, we provided a corn-soy blend porridge for children in preschools. We also helped families provide a variety of healthy food to their children.

As natural disasters significantly disrupted family livelihoods, there was a rise in child marriages. With your support, we intensified efforts through campaigns to end child marriage, supported children to return to school, provided vocational skills training, and facilitated small business start‑ups to help families and young people rebuild their lives.

Confident, empowered children and families

One of my most memorable experiences was witnessing the transformation of community members who, before your care, were limited in holding local leaders and governments accountable for services such as healthcare, education, and protection that their children should receive.

Through sustained advocacy training, community members grew confident and proactive in engaging leaders on issues affecting child well‑being.

Equally unforgettable was seeing families grow stronger, join savings groups, and find new ways to earn income and provide for their children with dignity for years to come.

Watching this journey of empowerment and strengthened community resilience that you made possible by walking alongside a child and the people of Onga is a memory I will always carry with pride and gratitude.

Thank you!
Your commitment to children in Onga has meant good health, quality education, and nutritious food year-round. All essentials to breaking free from poverty.

Thank you for transforming lives and leaving a lasting impact on our community. I hope you will continue to help another child and community who need you.
