When we started partnering with this community 15 years ago, families faced critical issues that deeply affected their children’s well-being: widespread poverty, high levels of malnutrition, limited access to education, high illiteracy rates, and serious child protection concerns.
With your help, we committed to addressing these urgent issues at the root.
While doing this, major events like the 2017 flood and COVID-19 increased the vulnerability of the community, making it harder for struggling families to earn a living and provide their children with nutritious food.
These crises also heightened child protection concerns, including child abuse, child marriage, child labour, school dropout, low school enrolment, and rising unemployment. Addressing these challenges was part of our vital work together.
Thanks to your support, significant changes took place in children’s lives – in many different areas.
Children are getting the nutrition they need to thrive
Surobi used to be malnourished, placing her health and development at risk. Through growth monitoring and child health sessions you supported, her caregivers received training on how to care for Surobi and cook nutrition-packed meals. With consistent family support, she is now healthy and strong.
Families can provide for their children’s basic needs
70% of families who were classified as ultra-poor moved out of that category and are now able to save money. With your help, families learnt new skills for new ways to earn an income. This means they can meet their children’s needs and build a brighter future for themselves.
A powerful example is 10-year-old Morsalin, now in Grade 4. His family once struggled to afford the most basic school supplies. Now, with your support, he has plenty of books, is thriving in school, and his family can afford nutritious food, too.
Children know their rights and are safer
Khadija was only 14 when her parents attempted to arrange her marriage, despite her being a brilliant student. With the intervention of the local children’s forum, which sponsors like you helped set up, the marriage was prevented. This allowed Khadija to continue her education, prepare for her Secondary School Certificate examination, and shape her own future.
Through sustained child protection initiatives and community awareness campaigns, you have helped prevent 123 child marriages! Thanks to sponsors like you, children are safer, empowered, and enjoying their fundamental rights.
