On behalf of your sponsored child, their family, community and local leaders, thank you for walking with us in Chi Kreng to help children build a brighter future.
Your generosity and compassion have brought better education, safety, health, nutrition and lasting community change.
Today, children are well fed and healthy, protected from all forms of child abuse in their community, able to read and write by the age of 11, and know the love of their neighbours and their community.
When we started this journey, children were facing many challenges, from unsafe water and poor sanitation to low school attendance and widespread malnutrition. Only 15% of women gave birth with a skilled attendant by their side. Less than 1% of families had toilets. Many children had to drop out of school to help their families survive, repeating the cycle of poverty.
With your support, we focused on children’s greatest needs: health, nutrition, clean water, education and family income. The change you helped create is remarkable.
Here are just a few of the amazing highlights you helped make possible:
Children are well nourished
Before, families faced serious food shortages for more than six months each year due to poor soil, limited land, lack of farming tools and no irrigation.
Most people earned very little and struggled to feed their families between August and October.
This led to widespread borrowing and debt, child sickness, malnutrition and school dropouts so kids could work to help families survive. Your kind sponsorship targeted the root causes of these issues by training families to use improved farming skills, and by providing tools and support to help them grow more food and earn a more stable income. As a result, children now have better nutrition, are healthier, and more likely to stay in school.
Babies are getting a better start in life
Thanks to your support, babies are breastfed, new mums get the healthcare they need, and every birth is attended by a skilled health worker. All 217 pregnant women in our programme received iron and folate supplements.
Through regular home visits and health education, families learnt how to care for their children. You helped turn knowledge into action, and action into lasting health.
Clean water and sanitation are the new normal
Almost all families have toilets (a massive increase from 1%) and clean water at home. You’ve helped double the number of people getting this life-saving essential! For children, this clean water means fewer illnesses and less time off school because they’re sick or collecting water, so kids can concentrate on learning and reach for their dreams.
With hygiene training, new latrines, and new understanding of the importance of handwashing and sanitation, families can protect themselves from water-related diseases.
Children are learning and thriving
When we started partnering in Chi Kreng, schools were overcrowded, under-resourced, and many children couldn’t read or write.
Through your sponsorship, you’ve helped train teachers in core reading skills and positive discipline, improve classrooms and libraries, and establish after-school reading camps to give kids extra reading support.
As a result, the number of children reaching the right reading level by Grade 3 has more than doubled—now 89%! More parents are helping their children learn at home and most school libraries now meet national quality standards.
You helped more children learn to read and succeed in school, and encouraged parents to support their education.
A safer community for children
Child protection has been a key part of this journey. Through partnerships with faith leaders, local leaders, youth and community volunteers, you’ve helped challenge harmful attitudes and behaviours.
You helped create a community where children are seen, valued, and feel safe. Today, 3 out of 4 young people say they feel confident they can overcome obstacles and achieve their goals. 2 out of 3 say their voices are heard in local decision-making. All known child protection cases are now followed up by local child protection groups.
You helped empower local child protection committees to keep children safe from domestic violence, child labour, child abuse and child marriage. You also championed young people to lead 65 community projects to help make Chi Kreng a safer community for children.
Hope even through hardship
The COVID-19 pandemic was a difficult chapter. Family incomes fell. School closures hurt children’s learning. Domestic violence and child labor rose.
But because you were there, the community stayed resilient. Children kept studying. Parents stayed hopeful. And local leaders kept working for change.
Today, girls and boys are well-nourished, safe, learning and cared for. As the community carries this work forward, I want to thank you deeply. You’ve changed the future of Chi Kreng.
