Can you imagine growing up in the crossfire of militant and terrorist groups? That’s life for the girls and boys of Marawi City who are at constant risk of being recruited themselves. But your generosity is helping children to speak truth to power and lead change.
While terrorist attacks and kidnappings are common in the region, generous Childhood Rescue supporters have helped young leaders like Aina, Nurhamid and Hashi to create a safe haven through The Barangay Children’s Association.
Here, girls and boys get to have fun and feel safe. But there’s a lot more going on.
They’re learning their rights, how to give feedback to the local government, make their voices heard and influence decisions and policies that impact their lives. Especially when it comes to child protection.
15-year-old Noryasim says, “being part of the association makes me feel very important. Because our concerns as children are being heard. Usually, if it comes from children, they won’t listen, right? So, I feel very important and happy because this time, our voices as children will be heard.”
“Just because we are young doesn't mean we can't contribute,” says 13-year-old Naima. “I feel happy and excited for our upcoming activities.”
“I felt very nervous when I arrived here because I did not know anyone and I was like, ‘Maybe I can’t do this’. But I was shocked when I met the team because they are good and are very friendly, especially the leaders,” says 15-year-old Yasmin.
The children of Marawi City are brave and resilient and are shaping their own future. “Children are the hope of our nation,” says 13-year-old Suhair. Like you, we couldn’t agree more!
With the love and care of Childhood Rescue supporters, 10 Barangay Children’s Associations are now running, with more than 500 members learning how to lead change.
