Nalanda Community, India

This rural community, in eastern India, are dependent on farming to feed their families, but face a constant battle against the elements. We've been partnering with the people of Nalanda since 2010.

Extreme heat, dry, infertile soil, and months of wet monsoon mean farmers are not growing enough crops to earn a living. This forces parents to find work outside the community, often leaving women to shoulder the responsibility of domestic life alone, and children to miss out on schooling. World Vision is there working with the community, helping families learn to grow gardens and cook with the ingredients, creating Child Clubs where children can discuss issues and learn about their rights, and treating and preventing malnutrition.

We’re working with the people of Nalanda to build a community where children thrive.

We’ve been partnering with Nalanda for eight years now and are starting to tackle the harder problems such as changing mindsets about the right to education for girls or early marriage. We’re focusing on building skills, hope and opportunity for Nalanda community.

After these projects are complete we ensure all our work is sustainable, and that the community is set up to identify and respond to needs as they arise. We plan for our partnership to continue until 2023 when we will have delivered a multitude of skills and knowledge for the community to continue their own development.
