From hunger to a huge harvest

From hunger to a huge harvest

Life for Brian’s family used to be tougher than most of us can imagine. He and his siblings often had to stay home and miss school because they were too hungry:

“We are intelligent, and we do well at school.

“But we had no option but to stay home and watch our friends go to school because we could not go on empty stomachs.”

Food was scarce, income was unreliable, and even basic necessities like clothes and school supplies were often out of reach.

At the same time, poor harvests only made things harder. Using traditional farming methods, the family could harvest just 15 bags of maize and 5 bags of pigeon peas each season, which was far too little to feed the family for the year ahead.

But when kind sponsors like you partnered with Brian’s community, everything began to change for children like Brian and their whole families.

Brian’s parents joined training to help them find new ways to forge a pathway out of poverty using the resources in their hands. And they joined a local savings group that sponsors like you helped set up, to help them save for the future and invest in new ways to earn stable income.

They began to see new possibilities for their family’s future. And together with their children, they created a family vision: to make sure each child could go to school with everything they needed to succeed.

Brian’s sponsor, someone caring like you, was walking beside them every step of the way.

Thanks to you and other sponsors of children in Onga, Brian’s family and many others received a cow through the livestock pass-on programme, where families give their cow’s offspring to another family in need. Soon, they were earning income from milk sales while also growing their savings.

Today, the change you helped make possible is incredible.

They’ve also put into action the new farming methods they learnt thanks to the training you helped make possible. Now, they harvest 60–80 bags of maize and 15 bags of pigeon peas each season - enough for the family to eat well year-round, with extra left over to store and sell!

Today, Brian and his siblings attend school regularly, with full stomachs and the learning materials they need to succeed. All thanks to your kindness.

What’s great is your care spread even further.

Inspired by the transformation in his own family, Brian’s father now volunteers in the programme that once helped him. He shares his knowledge and skills in livestock, farming, and saving for the future to help other families in the community and pass on everything he’s learnt.

In this way, just like the pass-on cow Brian’s family received, your love is passed on to other families in need.

Thank you so much for your compassion! Your sponsorship has helped start cycles of kindness, generosity, and hope that will last for generations.

Now his family is strong, Brian’s father passes on your kindness and care to other families in need. Thank you for starting this cycle of generosity!
