“See how strong I have grown!”

“See how strong I have grown!”

At 19 years old, Moses is about to become the first person not only in his family, but in his whole village, to do something amazing.

He’s about to go to university.

And it’s thanks to a kind sponsor like you, his hard work – and a dairy cow.

When Moses was young, the dry season meant every moment of his day was plagued by hunger.

His village didn’t get much rain, so crops often died. Those that did grow yielded little.

That meant families like his didn’t have enough food. Moses and many children around him were malnourished and often sick.

As you can imagine, making the long walk to school and trying to pay attention in class is tough when you’ve had nothing to eat. It was so tough, many children simply stopped going.

Then, when Moses was seven, someone with a generous heart like you decided to become his sponsor.

One of the life-changing things sponsors like you did in Onga was bring training to caregivers in child health and nutrition.

A team of local volunteers learnt about what children needed to grow strong and then shared their new knowledge with other mums. Moses’ mum Maria was part of this team, as he explains:

“My mother was part of training with other people in the village who learnt how to improve the way we eat to be more nutritious using ground nuts and other things, and now we eat very, very nice food!”

The group also made sure children were growing well. Each volunteer visited 10 families, and referred any child showing signs of malnutrition to the local health clinic for treatment.

With you by their side, the community kept on working together to stop malnutrition for good. Those who had a good crop shared extra vegetables with any family that needed help to feed their children.

However, growing enough food was still difficult for families in Onga. You see, like many other parents, Moses’ father worked hard but he couldn’t earn enough to meet his family’s needs. Moses’ mum Maria says:

“In the past, we had trouble just getting enough food to eat because my husband didn’t earn very much money. There were times when we were hungry, and the children didn’t have enough to eat to be healthy.”

Then child sponsors like you provided struggling families with goats and farming training. Moses says he’ll never forget these precious gifts of practical kindness:

“Those goats helped solve so many challenges in our life.

“We could take a goat, sell it, and use the money to pay for school fees, or buy school uniforms when we needed them.

“That really improved our living standards, because after we had those goats, we could even afford breakfast, and you can see how strong I have grown now!”

Moses continued attending school and working hard. Then it came time for secondary school, but the closest high school was several hours’ walk from his home. Maria shares:

“It was hard because he had to leave at 4am to get to school when he went to secondary school.”

That’s when, right when it was needed most, the kindness of you and other sponsors of children in Onga provided a dairy cow for Moses’s family and others in the community.

The milk was a nutritious source of food and energy for Moses. And with 30 litres of milk every day, there was far more than his family needed.

So the World Vision team helped the community set up a cooperative to sell the cow’s milk. And with that income, Moses could pay for transport to school!

To pass on your love and care, Moses’s family gave the first calf to another family in need in the community, and when their cow has a calf, they will pass it on again.

Moses has applied to study medicine because he wants to help people in his community to have good health and live full lives:

“I wish my community had better health; that’s why I want to be a doctor. I want to save people’s lives. I want to be the one who helps people to be healthy.

“Then I want to join an organisation like World Vision who helps people to improve their lives.”

Maria, Moses’ mum is so proud of her son. She says:

“I am proud that Moses wants to be a doctor. I think that he will be a good doctor, because he’s very kind and helpful.

“He’s going to live not just his dream, but the dream of many other people in our village, by being the first person here to ever go to university.”

Moses is living proof of the power of your sponsorship to change children’s lives and futures.

Thank you so much for your incredible generosity that has brought lasting change to Moses and so many other children, their families, and the whole Onga community! Your love has opened doors to a future filled with opportunities.

“The first time the goat gave birth, we were asked to pass one on to someone else in the village. Now there are many goats in the village. The whole village is now improved – more children are able to go to school, more people can buy food when they need it.” Moses, age 19, former sponsored child.
