For Fausl, now age 17, school was more than just a place to learn. It was somewhere she felt calm, safe, and full of hope.
“I enjoyed being in school,” says Fausl. “It was the best part of my life. I never thought those days would be taken away from me.”
Tragically, everything changed for Fausl two years ago, when the war in Sudan reached her village.
Her school closed. She couldn’t sleep. There was nowhere safe to turn. And in the chaos of gunfire, Fausl’s father was killed – her family shattered in an instant.
“We all started running in different directions for safety,” shares Fausl. “There was no time to prepare. I moved with my sister Asrar, and our mother took a different direction.”
That was how Fausl and her sister became suddenly separated from their mum. Not knowing what else to do, they joined a group of strangers and began a long, terrifying walk to safety.
“I remember seeing dead bodies along the way of people shot on the road,” Fausl shares. “Even though children were not the target, many have died in this war. We were lucky to survive.
“Eventually. we made our way across the border into Uganda.”
Thanks to your compassion, Fausl and her sister were welcomed at a refugee camp in Uganda – tired, scared, and all alone.

They also learned that their mother was alive and had already been resettled in Uganda. The news filled them with a mixture of disbelief and joy.
“I couldn’t believe that she is still alive,” says Fausl. “After everything we went through, the thought of seeing her again gives me strength. I can’t wait to see her again.”
Fausl and her sister have been reassured that it is possible to find their mother, and for the first time in two years, Fausl is feeling hopeful.
