On a scorching summer afternoon, community leader Singa returned home from a long day of labour in the fields. His throat was dry, his body exhausted.
He asked his wife for a glass of water. But there was none.
You see, the only tube well in his community served 110 households, so the wait for water was extremely long. And that day, the owner of another nearby tube well refused to share his water.
With no choice, Singa’s wife walked half a kilometre under the burning sun just to collect a small amount of water from another house. Singa recalls:
“For a moment, I felt helpless. Even drinking water was beyond our reach.”
More than just thirst
Singa is a local leader in his village in Mithapukur, where 110 families faced a daily struggle without enough water and sanitation facilities.
Along with only one well for 110 households, there was only one toilet for every 10 families.
This meant women and children had to walk long distances every day to collect water. Hours were wasted waiting in line. Worry about the lack of water caused arguments and fights.
Everyone was at risk of water-related disease and dehydration.
Your compassion brought to life
Determined to change their future, Singa reached out for help – and you were there.
You and other generous sponsors of children in Mithapukur helped install six water collection stations and 25 public taps for safe drinking water.
Your incredible care means:
- Children have clean water close by
- They no longer miss school to collect water
- Women don’t need to walk long distances in the heat
- Children are no longer at risk of water-related disease
- There’s no worry about running out of water, even in the summer
What’s more, the clean water you supplied will last for years to come!
That’s because you helped the community form an 11-member Water Supply Management Committee to manage electricity bills, collect small household contributions, and maintain the system.
This is your love in action! Your commitment to your sponsored child and other children in Mithapukur has provided safe water for a whole community and brought them together.
Singa is so grateful for the transformation you helped bring:
“We have struggled a lot to bring back our hope. Now one of our basic needs is fulfilled.
We can think about our children’s future.
We can focus on family well-being.
We can live with dignity.”
What a precious gift you’ve given. Thank you so much for your compassion!
