“I used to be depressed, thinking about giving up on school and everything that I was doing because my family faced many problems,” says Ratha, now a 24-year-old primary school teacher in Chi Kreng, Cambodia.
“My father passed away, and my mother started to drink. She struggled to care for us... I didn’t want to talk to anyone. I just wanted to separate myself from people around me.”
Ratha lived with her mother and siblings in poverty and carried a deep sense of fear and insecurity.
Sponsorship opened doors for Ratha to discover hidden talents.
Thankfully, Ratha’s feelings began to change when a kind Kiwi named Ann decided to sponsor her and help her build a brighter future.
She was invited to participate in youth activities and even signed up to become a reading club volunteer.
Through meetings and workshops, she learnt about child rights, life skills and leadership.
Sponsors like you wrapped arms of love around Ratha and other young people in her community. Your support sent a practical message that you cared and believed in their future.
Slowly, Ratha began to believe in herself.
She didn’t give up on school. She finished high school and went on to graduate from university!
Sponsorship opened doors for Ratha to learn leadership skills and inspire other children in her community.
Now she helps vulnerable children in her community.
“I am very happy that I can volunteer to help my community, especially the most vulnerable children, by participating in development activities with local authorities,” she says.
“Thanks to my kind sponsor and World Vision for helping me see that I had talents. It motivated me to overcome obstacles and now help many children in the community.”
She trains parents to support their children’s learning too.
Today, Ratha is not only a professional schoolteacher, but she still volunteers as a reading camp facilitator and youth club leader.
She also trains parents to support their children’s learning at home and helps find resources for playgrounds and after-school literacy sessions.
A bright future.
“I will continue working as a community volunteer and will regularly support the reading camp activities for years to come,” Ratha says with conviction.
Because a kind sponsor like you cared, Ratha’s future is filled with possibilities.
And she’s paying forward all the kindness she received to inspire the next generation of kids in Chi Kreng to believe in themselves and succeed in school too.
